If you need to obtain a California Apostille for your marriage license, it’s important to read the following information on how to obtain your marriage license and what to do once you have the certified license in your possession.

The first step is to contact the county in which you were married in.  There are a total of 58 counties in California.  You must request a certified copy and not an informational copy.  The California Secretary of State will only attach an Apostille to a certified copy.  Usually most certified copies are requested by one of the married couple but in certain situations the following people can also request a certified copy; Parent, legal guardian, law enforcement, government agency, a court order, attorney, child, grandparent, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or domestic partner.

If you live too far to drive to the county clerk, you should visit the website of the county in which you were married and download the correct marriage license order forms.  You maybe asked to have your signature notarized on one of the forms to establish identity.

Once you have obtained a certified copy of your California Marriage License signed by the County clerk, you are now eligible to receive a California Apostille.  Keep in mind that a California Apostille is only issued by the California Secretary of State and not by the county.

California Marriage Certificate Apostille

Do you need an Apostille for your California Marriage Certificate? We provide California Apostille service to Marriage Certificates issued in California.

If you reside outside Los Angeles or anywhere in California, you can mail us your original marriage license for processing with the California secretary of state (Apostille) located in Los Angeles.

First, we need to make sure your California Marriage License is eligible for an Apostille. Is your Marriage Certificate an original with a blue / pink color? If not, you’ll need to request an original be mailed to you or take your current original to the County Clerk / Recorder/Registrar’s office for certification.

You do not automatically receive a certified copy when you get married. You must request and pay for a certified copy from the local registrar of marriages (County Recorder).  For further information, please contact the County Clerk or Recorder’s Office near you.

Some countries will only recognize your California Marriage Certificate or other type of official document if it’s authenticated by the Secretary of State of which the document was issued. This authentication can be an Apostille or a Certification.
