Do you need a California Apostille for a Criminal Background Check from the California Department of Justice (DOJ)?
The first step in obtaining a California criminal background check with the California Deparment of Justice is to first visit the State of California Department of Justice web site. The California Department of Justice provides an automated service for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment, licensing, certification, foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances.
In order to receive an Apostille, you need to request a letter from the attorney general signed by a Criminal Identification Specialist.
Here is a sample of the letter you’ll receive from the California DOJ for your Apostille:
It’s important to request a letter signed by a Criminal Identification Specialist or another individual authorized to do so at the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice may not automatically send you this letter with your results so it’s important to request one to be included with your results. Without this written and signed letter by a Specialist at the DOJ, you will not be eligible for a California Apostille.
