There are many reasons why another country will request an apostille on a death certificate.  Common reason are inheritance, property transfer, pension, bank accounts, custody issues, adoption, etc….

The first step is to obtain a certified copy of the death certificate from the County Clerk’s office.  In the State of California, there are 58 County Clerk offices and each County issues the death certificate.  The death certificate must be issued from the County Clerk’s office of the County the person passed away in.  For example, if the person passed away in San Francisco, the death certificate will be isued from the San Francisco County Clerk’s office.

If you don’t have a certified copy of the certificate, we recommend that you contact the County Clerk or order a certified copy online through Vitalcheck.com. Please note that only a select few people are able to obtain a certified copy of the death certificate. You can request Vitalcheck.com to forward a copy of this certificate to our office for processing.

In order for the State to apostille the death certificate, the certificate must be issued by the County Clerk’s office or State registrar.  The State of California will not apostille death certificates issued from the Health Services Department and signed by a medical doctor.  The only exception to this rule is when the certificate is issued from the California State office (Not County Clerk).
