Do you need a Background Check Apostille?

You have four available options when choosing which Government agency (City, County, State or Federal) to use in order to obtain a background check.  In most cases, the person or company requesting the Apostille for the Background Check will mention where you should get it from.

In this article, we’re going to focus more on obtaining a background check from the local Police / Sheriff’s station located in California and from the California Department of Justice (DOJ).

If you have already left the country, you can still obtain your background check.  You may need to seek the help of the local US Embassy in the country you are in.  The local US Embassy can help you with your fingerprints and filling out any forms required to obtain your background check.  Please call us or Contact Us with any questions you may have.

California Department of Justice DOJ – Criminal Background Check

Do you need a California Apostille for a Criminal Background Check from the California Department of Justice (DOJ)?

The first step in obtaining a California criminal background check with the California Deparment of Justice is to first visit the State of California Department of Justice web site. The California Department of Justice provides an automated service for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment, licensing, certification, foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances.

In order to receive an Apostille, you need to request a letter from the attorney general signed by a Criminal Identification Specialist.

Here is a sample of the letter you’ll receive from the California DOJ for your Apostille:

It’s important to request a letter signed by a Criminal Identification Specialist or another individual authorized to do so at the Department of Justice. The Department of Justice may not automatically send you this letter with your results so it’s important to request one to be included with your results. Without this written and signed letter by a Specialist at the DOJ, you will not be eligible for a California Apostille.

California Department of Justice (DOJ) Apostille

Do you need a California Apostille for your Department of Justice Criminal Background check?

The California Department of Justice (DOJ) provides an automated service for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment, licensing, certification, foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances.

It’s important to request a letter signed by a Criminal Identification Specialist or another individual at the Department of Justice.  The Department of Justice may not automatically send you this letter with your results so it’s important to request one to be included with your results.  Without this written and signed letter by a Specialist at the DOJ, you will not be eligible for a California Apostille.

You have the option to request your own Criminal Record or if your working with an agency, the agency will give you instructions on how to apply for your California DOJ criminal history background check.

California Criminal Background Check Apostille

The first step in obtaining a California criminal background check with the California Deparment of Justice is to first visit the State of California Department of Justice web site.  The California Department of Justice provides an automated service for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment, licensing, certification, foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances.

Individuals have the right to request a copy of their own personal criminal history record from the California Department of Justice to review for accuracy and completeness.

You may also request a background check from the FBI.  In most cases, this may not be required as the criminal history background check from the California Department of Justice is sufficient.

Once you have obtained the results, you will then need to mail it to our location in Los Angeles.  Please included our California Apostille order form and complete the sections required.  We ask that you send us your documents by FedEx, UPS, or USPS Priority mail.  If we receive your documents by 10:30am,  we can obtain your Apostille and overnight your documents back to your location.  Your documents will arrive by the following business morning.
