Do you need an apostille on your California Birth Certificate?
In order to apostille a California birth certificate, the certificate must be issued from the County Clerk or California State Registrar. In some instances, a birth certificate may be issued from the County Health Department. A birth certificate issued from the County Health Department requires County Clerk authentication prior to receiving a California apostille.
Let me explain further… In the State of California, there are 58 County Clerk offices and 58 County Health Departments. In each County, there is also a Health Department. Birth certificates issued from the County Health Department will need to be authenticated by the County Clerk prior to receiving an apostille. Most people who are unfamiliar with this process unfortunately learn it the hard way when they travel to the State office.
There are several ways in which you can guarantee that the State will process your birth certificate:
- Obtain a certified copy from the County Clerk
- Obtain a certified copy from the California State Vital Records office.
- Obtain a certified copy from the California State Health Department.
If you do mail in a birth certificate issued from the County Health Department, will will present your document to the State office for review. If the State rejects your document, we will obtain the rejection letter and contact you the same-day.
If we do contact you regarding the rejection of your birth certificate, there are three steps you can take:
- You can have us authenticate your certificate with the County Clerk at an added cost and processing time. (Best choice)
- You can order a new certified copy from the County Clerk direction or online through VitalCheck.com (Second best choice)
- Contact the California Vital Records Department for information. (Can take months if you go this route – third best choice)
The best and fastest method is to have us handle the County Clerk authentication and the State apostille. If your birth certificate is from the Los Angeles County, we can authenticate it through the County Clerk and the State the same-day.
