1961 Hague Convention California Apostille

To achieve uniformity to the greatest extent possible with Apostilles issued by other states of the United States, and to closely mirror The Hague Conference on Private International Law’s model certificate, the California Apostille is modeled on the trilingual model certificate published by the Hague Conference.

Here is an example of a California Apostille:

In 1961, many countries joined together to create a simplified method of “legalizing” documents for universal recognition. Members of the conference, referred to as the Hague Convention, adopted a document referred to as an Apostille that would be recognized by all member countries.

Since October 15, 1981, the United States has been part of the 1961 Hague Convention abolishing the Requirement of Legalization for Foreign Public Documents.  Another words, documents apostilled by the California Secretary of State will be accepted by countries who are also members of the Apostille Convention.  Not every country is a member and those which are not, the California Secretary of State will issue a Certification.

Common documents we obtain a California Apostille for are: Birth, Marriage, Death, Divorce, Power of Attorney, and Affidavits.  Many companies in California also send us their documents.  These documents include: Articles of Incorporation, Certificate of Good Standing, Certification of Free Sale, and more!  You can view a list of common documents we can obtain an Apostille for by visiting this link: http://www.apostille.la/documents-for-apostille-service/

Each Apostille issued by the California Secretary of State is randomly numbered and can be verified by visiting the California Secretary of State’s website.

Apostilles can be complicated. Don’t leave this process to untrained employees or non-professionals who do not fully understand the California Apostille process and the unique requirements of certain countries. Your paperwork could be rejected costing you time and money. Don’t let this happen to you!
