Apostille a Divorce Decree

There are many reasons why you may be requesting an apostille on a Divorce Decree.  If you were married before and plan to get married again in another country, the requesting country will ask to see an apostille on your divorce decree to solidify that you are currently no longer married. Some countries may also request additional documentation.  For example, they may ask for an apostille your birth certificate and single status affidavit.  It’s important to know exactly what is being requested in order to avoid any delays and additional costs.

A divorce decree needs to a certified copy issued by the Superior Court and signed by the Deputy Clerk.  There are 58 Counties in Calfornia.  A divorce decree must be issued by the Superior Court in the county you were divorced in.  We recommend that you request a supervisor or manager sign your certified divorce decree.  About 30% to 45% of divorce decree’s received at our office are signed by individuals who’s signatures are not on file with the State.  This can cause a delay up to a week.  In order to avoid any delays in processing your paperwork, ask a supervisor or manager to sign your document.

Nonetheless, all documents we receive are verified prior to being hand-delivered to the Secretary of State’s office. If we encounter any problems, we will contact you ASAP and provide you step-by-step directions on how to fix the problem.

Apostilles can be complicated. Don’t leave this process to untrained employees or non-professionals who do not fully understand the Apostille process and the unique requirements of certain countries. Your paperwork could be rejected costing you time and money. Don’t let this happen to you!
